F1 Wired website – screenshots

After much greying of the hair, and more wrinkles of the face I’m actually making progress on the website. It’s been a love / hate relationship between me, my computer and a web server. We all love each other but don’t seem to get on that well during the majority of our time together.

The idea of F1 Wired is to is to merge all of the existing fantastic web content and aggregate it in one place creating an F1 community – hence the F1 Wired name.  The website is based on RSS feeds from blogs, websites, YouTube, Vimeo, Flickr, Picassa and anywhere else there is quality content. It will enable you to look at great content from across the web, displayed in one place. You can also share other great website content that isn’t included on the F1 Wired with other users by suggesting we link to it via their RSS feed.

RSS IconYou will know whether your favorite F1 websites display RSS feeds by looking for the RSS icon like this one  . This is usually located at the top of the homepage or within your web address bar.

It’s still very early days for the website but hopefully I’ll be publishing a Beta version over the summer.

Your comments are very welcome , and if you want a sneak preview at the working site, although it’s in test stage, send me a message on Twitter @f1wired

Lack of speed forces HRT to change chassis

HRT have addressed handling concerns after Lotus F1 boycotted the suggestion to have a separate ‘slowest of the slow’ Monaco Grand Prix qualifying session. HRTs sponsors threatened to start placing their advertising on the marshals instead of the cars as there was more chance of getting some TV coverage. HRT, worried that their cars would be featured as another mobile corner around the twisty Monaco track have ironed out some of the problems with their car. Mechanical grip seems to be a big area of concern for the team, especially around the Monaco circuit so they have opted to switch to a new chassis which they believe should produce a laptime 2 seconds quicker than their current chassis.

China GP and the Volcanic Aftermath

After reading Grandprix diary’s funny and excellent take on the cancellation of all UK flights following the volcano eruption in Iceland – it inspired me into a little bit of Photoshopping. Enjoy :-)

Building the F1Wired portal structure

Sorry I haven’t posted in a while. I had some issues with the RSS integration which have now been sorted. RSS feeds from other F1 websites are now listed in order of publish date, and articles can be shown within the portal. I’ve also managed to style the feeds to match the style of the portal, stripping out the  horrible <span> tags.

Now that the RSS structure for the portal seems to be working well (and quick too!) I’m going to start pulling in feeds from other sites such as YouTube to bring you all the latest F1 videos, and Picassa and Flickr for all of the latest F1 images.

Hopefully I’ll have something to show within the next couple of weeks and will be publishing the portal as a beta version to some lucky individuals who can tear it apart, and tell me what’s wrong with it! In the mean time – follow me on twitter @f1wired and say hello! If you’d like to be one of the first to have access to the portal send me a quick message on Twitter and I’ll make sure you get the first glimpse.

RSS Intergration

The RSS feeds that are pulled from specific F1 websites can now be filtered by keywords and articles displayed within the website. I’m now designing how a user can interact with the RSS list, and pull through content they would like to see using AJAX. Almost there now, just tinkering with the scripts, and trying to make them as small as possible, but also flexible, so I can add other features later on, with the minimum of fuss.

At present the RSS feeds are displayed in order of which website they came from. My next stop is to change this, mash them together, with the latest articles being shown first, irrelevent of where they’ve come from.

I’ve also started some work on other data such as venues and calendar info. Not knowing what she was letting herself in for, my wife has begun to input all the appropriate data for these pages, while I concentrate on the coding. Hopefully it should speed up development of the portal.

F1 Wired Portal – The beginning

Well, here we go! I’ve started the development of the F1 Wired portal. The last couple of weeks has seen me trying to identify F1 blogs and other content that I can drag into the F1 Wired website. Importing RSS feeds is a relatively easy thing to do. Behind the F1 Wired portal sits a database which stores RSS feed web addresses. A web script cycles through the database, collects the data from each website, filtering it for any keywords before publishing it to the webpage.

My initial thought for filtering articles was to create a category list which users could pick from (general, technical, humour etc). The F1 Fired website would filter articles appropriately. This has led me to my first problem. Although there are a lot of good F1 blogs on t’internet, writers are not good at categorising each individual article. If you are a blog owner, please please can you add more metadata to your blogs!

To get around this problem I have had to categorise the blog site the articles come from, instead of filtering each article. It’s not perfect but it’s a start!

Next stop, Twitter and collating Tweets that have the #f1 tag. I’ll keep you posted!

A new F1 Blog

Welcome to F1 Wired, and this, my first posting.

So why should I follow F1 Wired when there are so many other  good F1 blog sites I hear you say? Well, surprisingly enough, I’m going to agree with you. There are some cracking F1 blogs about -  just look at F1 Fanatic’s wonderful blog site and you’ll see what I mean.

F1Wired is going to be different because you will be able to read all of that lovely content in one place, and filter through to exactly what you’re looking for. That’s right! We’ll do the hard work for you. If you’re only looking for articles about Ferrari our website will search through all of the lovely blogs and websites and bring you Ferrari rich content.

F1Wired are also planning a race dashboard, bringing all the latest news, times, and views from across the Globe, realtime!

We’d love to hear your comments and suggestions so please drop us a line! Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter @F1Wired.

Stay tuned and have a great 2010 season!

Matt
